Let’s dive straight in.
NUMBER 10 – Buying a House Before Renting
It’s very easy to fall in love with Spain’s charm and rush to buy your dream home. But living somewhere is VERY different from having a holiday there! Try renting first to truly experience the area before committing. Trust me—your wallet will thank you. The costs of buying, selling, then buying again can make a big hole in your pocket, and moving house isn’t exactly the least stressful activity on the planet.
NUMBER 9 – Failing to Visit Spain First
Believe it or not, some people dive in without dipping their feet in the water first! You can only learn so much from photos and videos and recommendations online. Nothing compares to experiencing a place firsthand.
So take a visit, do some exploring, get a feel for everyday life—you might find it’s not quite what you expected.
NUMBER 8 – Not checking out Different Regions
Spain is incredibly diverse! The sunny beaches of the Costa del Sol are worlds apart from the rainy green hills of Galicia or the bustling streets of Madrid.
And you should really visit in both summer and winter to avoid surprises—like discovering your favourite village is a ghost town off-season!
NUMBER 7 – Ignoring Finances
Spain may seem quite affordable compared to where you’re from, but costs can quickly add up—there’s health insurance, unexpected repairs, emergencies, and don’t forget all of those trips you’re planning on making to see the wonders of Spain. There’s also the exchange rate if you’re earning in a different currency. Get some advice on that via THIS LINK.
Always plan a detailed budget, and keep a safety cushion for the unexpected!
NUMBER 6 – Not Understanding the Visa Process
You’ll know from our Blog page that moving to Spain isn’t as simple as packing your bags! Depending on your nationality, you may need a visa to live, work, or even retire here. Do your research early to avoid the problems, we’ve got lots of videos about the process, and it can save you a lot of time, money and frustration if you consult a trusted specialist—and don’t forget about visa renewals! It pays to plan ahead.

NUMBER 5 – Thinking You’ll Get a Job Easily
Spain’s job market can be competitive, especially if you don’t speak Spanish or have specific skills in demand. Remote work or starting your own business may be better options, but these do take time to set up. The passport that you and your spouse hold may make a big difference to your chances of getting a job. Again, do your research well in advance.
NUMBER 4 – Failing to Connect with Locals
It’s easy to stay in an expat bubble, but the real magic of Spain lies in its people and its culture. Join in with local clubs and events, learn the traditions, and don’t be afraid to say hola to your neighbours, a smile goes a long way—you’ll feel more at home in no time!
NUMBER 3 – Not Anticipating Culture Shock
Spanish life is pretty amazing, I love it, but it can feel very different—there’s the late dinners, slower pace of life, shop closing times, and the infamous siesta. Embrace the differences, and give yourself time to adjust.
NUMBER 2 – Bureaucracy

Spain’s paperwork can be overwhelming—residency cards, health insurance, registering with the local town hall… the list goes on and on. So start early, stay organised, and ask for help if you need it. Patience! Patience! Patience! Oh, and Patience!
NUMBER 1 – Not Learning the Language
Spanish people really do appreciate the effort, even if you’re not fluent. Learning the language opens doors—figuratively and literally. Plus, it makes navigating life so much easier! But don’t wait until after you’ve arrived, make the effort to at least have a basic grasp of the lingo by the time you get here.
So Spain is an incredible place to live, but avoiding these common mistakes will make your transition much smoother.
